The short version

bbqhop.com has no user accounts, sets no tracking cookies, and runs no analytics or advertising scripts. We do not build a profile of you, and we have nothing to sell to anyone. The only information we ever receive directly is what you choose to type into a submission form.

What we collect

Nothing, unless you submit a form. Browsing the directory, opening a joint page, using the map, or planning a crawl sends us no personal information.

If you use Submit a joint or Submit a crawl, we receive what you enter — the joint or crawl name, its location, your notes, and your email address if you provide one. Email is optional; we ask for it only so we can follow up on your suggestion. Alongside the form contents our server records your IP address and browser user-agent string, which we use solely to catch automated spam.

Submissions are retained for up to two years so we can work through the editorial backlog, then deleted.

Cookies and local storage

We set no cookies. The crawl planner saves your in-progress crawl, and any crawls you name, to your browser’s localStorage — that data stays on your device and is never transmitted to us. Clearing your browser data removes it.

Third-party services

Some parts of the site load from other companies’ servers. Those requests come from your browser, so those companies necessarily see your IP address and apply their own policies:

  • Cloudflare hosts the site and processes every request. Cloudflare keeps limited network logs for security and abuse prevention.
  • Google Fonts serves our typefaces. Google receives your IP address and user-agent when a page loads.
  • OpenStreetMap serves the map tiles on the map and planner pages, and receives your IP plus which tiles you request — which reveals roughly what area of the map you are looking at.
  • Project OSRM calculates driving routes. When you build a crawl, the coordinates of your stops are sent to its public routing servers. Your own location is never sent — routes are computed between joints, not from you.
  • Cloudflare R2 serves joint photographs.

If you follow an outbound link — a joint’s own website, or the “Open in Google Maps” button — you leave bbqhop.com and that destination’s privacy policy applies. The Google Maps link is a plain URL; we send Google nothing about you beyond the destination you asked to navigate to.

Affiliate links

Some outbound links on this site may be affiliate links, meaning we could earn a commission if you book or buy something after clicking, at no extra cost to you. Affiliate relationships never influence which joints appear in the directory, how they are ranked, or what we write about them. Editorial judgement and commercial links are kept strictly separate.

Information about businesses

The directory contains factual business information — names, addresses, phone numbers, opening hours, public ratings — compiled from publicly available sources. That is information about businesses, not about private individuals. If you own or represent a listed joint and want an entry corrected or removed, email us and we will handle it promptly.

Your rights

Because we hold no account data, there is usually nothing of yours for us to produce or erase. If you have sent us a submission and want it deleted, or want to know what we hold, email [email protected] and we will take care of it.

If you are in the EU, UK, or California, the rights those laws grant you — access, correction, deletion, and objection — apply here regardless of how little data is involved. We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined under the CCPA/CPRA.

Children

This site is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.

Changes

If this policy changes materially, the date at the top of this page changes with it.
