Reese Bros Barbecue

After battling away the army of flies that seemed to want this food more than I did, I realized I had been bamboozled. The sides were fine. The sausage was okay. Tortillas were decent. The brisket and carnitas was super tough and dry. Nothing blew me away. In today's BBQ world, not every meat can be fully perfect. But I expect one or two things to blow my behind off. As long as that happens, I'm fine. And sure, I get it, bbq has exploded in popularity and places have to resort to using subpar cuts and have to cook in huge batches which sacrifices quality. But at least it could've had some spice and smoke flavor to it. Some places where even if it's dry as leather, it's flavorful. Here, nothing. Just... hard plain rubber with bands of unrendered fat. No deep smoky flavor, no salt. Nothing. Reese, my bro's, what's going on? You're great at making Pieces but what happened to the BBQ?? In this week I've tried more bbq than should be allowed across texas, and of them, this is my least favorite, unfortunately. I was hoping this would be the sleeper hit of San Antonio but I have been pranked.

This place is great, I got there at 8:45. There was no need, I could've gotten there at 10:00 and still had a great spot. But I do like being the first one, anyways the food was excellent. My top two recommendations from here are the brisket and the poblano Mac, 5 stars. The turkey surprised me, they did an excellent job on this, super juicy and the perfect amount of seasoning kudos for had. The ribs, sausage and carnitas were also pretty good. The sausage got better to me the more I ate it, the centers were perfect very good amount of cheese. Cole slaw and potato salad very complimentary to meal. I can see why this place is in the top 50, great job to the team. If I could make a few suggestions, have some plastic that you use for your sides at the "to go station" it's allot easier to put stuff in that then wrap everything in the aluminum foil that no telling how many hands have touched, I wasn't crazy about that. I went to the front and asked for some and was told to use aluminum foil. Second thing, I'd prefer to swipe my card once for something simple like sodas, having to the bar was an extra step but I get it the the alcohol. I don't drink, but I'll say she and one of the guys that helps clean up was the only two I saw smiling and were friendly. These are small things but left a little bit of a sour taste in my mouth. Parking is free in the back, which is very convenient. We tried almost everything on the menu and were impressed with most of it. The brisket was well-smoked and flavorful, the ribs were tender, and the smoked turkey was a pleasant surprise. The sausage was solid, and the carnitas were very tender and delicious. For sides, we got the poblano mac, okra and beans, coleslaw, and potato salad. The poblano mac was okay, the okra and beans were enjoyable, and the coleslaw was unique not your typical coleslaw but would pair perfectly with tacos. I’d recommend getting some flour tortillas if you order the coleslaw to make your own tacos. The potato salad was fair. The restaurant offers two types of barbecue sauce, both of which were really good. There’s also a convenient station where you can grab aluminum, bags, utensils, paper food boats and lids if you want to take your food to go. The space is open and welcoming, the staff was very friendly, and drinks are ordered separately, but water is available. Overall, we really enjoyed our experience and would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for good barbecue.
